![]() ![]() The free program supports the following file types currently out of the box: mkv, mk3d, avi, webm, ogm, ogv, flv, rm, rmvb, xvid, divx, flac, ogg, opus, ape, mpc, mka, ofr, ofs, spx, tak, tta, wav, wv. The program uses Windows Shell extensions to add the functionality, and ships with 32-bit and 64-bit shell extensions support.Īll supported video formats are displayed by it on first run, and it is up to you to keep the default selection (which means all file types are registered) or customize the selection instead.įor instance, if you only want mkv files to be displayed with thumbnails in Windows Explorer, you can make that selection using the configuration menu. Icaros is a free program for all recent versions of Windows that adds thumbnail support to Windows for several popular video formats. Videos on the other hand are usually shown using default icons and there is little that you can do about it using built-in functionality of the operating system. Most images are for instance displayed as previews if you pick extra large, large or medium icons from the view options. Some file types are displayed as previews automatically if you select a supporting view mode while others are only shown with default icons and no preview image. Sometimes however, it is nice to display thumbnails of files directly in the file manager as it may help with recognition. It is also curious that your DNG files were not showing thumbnail previews.I prefer the details view most of the time as it highlights more than just a name and an icon. ![]() When done, just close the CC window and a TIFF file with the edits is shipped back to LR and placed in the catalog. Then pop over to CC for content-aware edits and layers, etc. Sync all the changes to similar shots from the same session. I import RAW files into LR, make some typical adjustments which I have presets for to get me most of the way to what I like. And there are some other LR modules that you may, or may not find useful, like the print, book, and slideshow modules.ĬC is a much more powerful editor, for sure, and where I spend most of my time doing edits, other than global slider adjustments. However, the user interface is more polished in LR. ![]() Technically, anything you can do in the LR develop module, you can also do in Camera Raw in PS CS or CC. The editing commands are not actually performed on the file until you export the image, so every change is reversible without causing damage to the file.Īnother advantage of the catalog is organization and keywording, which many people like, but I hardly use, myself. Once you import your files into LR, all the editing commands are stored in the catalog, even for editing jpeg files. Whereas with photoshop it is possible to do non-destructive editing if you know what you are doing, but it is also very easy to go astray. The LR workflow encourages you along the path of non-destructive editing. The advantages of LR - well, it is mostly the catalog (which some people can't stand, but I like a lot). I was using the DNG converter for awhile with CS5, too, before upgrading to CS6. I'm thinking about getting lightroom, but I'm not sure what the benefits are over full PS. cr2 from the 6D, but will open and process DNG files after they are converted. You're right, it's a little odd because it's a workaround. Probably not interesting enough to dig into it, though. As I said, mine showed up OK before downloading the codec. It is also curious that your DNG files were not showing thumbnail previews. What benefit do you get from converting to DNG temporarily? Why not just stick with CR2 files, if that's what you want to end up with? What post-processing tool(s) are you using? Seems like an odd way to do things, but maybe if I understood why it would make sense. I only temporarily create a dng to work on the raw, then delete it, keeping the original raw. My DNG files were not showing thumbnail previews before, I have not tried after. Since I hardly ever look at RAW thumbnails in windows, it wasn't much of a problem, but now I can. But I confirmed that CR2 files were not showing up OK until I installed the codec. I also convert to DNG, for which thumbnails show up just fine in windows. As for why it was not a big deal, I use Lightroom, which generates it's own previews. I had neglected to install the codec on my new computer, and now I have. ![]()
